Who am I going to teach?

8th Grade Art 

 

What am I going to teach?:

I will teach about typography, fonts and typefaces. The students will be expanding their own creativity by developing a font and incorporating it into an illustration.

 

Why am I going to teach?:

Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to create artworks integrating themes found through direct observation, personal experiences, and imagination. (117.38 8 A)

 

Historical/cultural heritage. The student demonstrates an understanding of art history and culture as records of human achievement. The student is expected to survey career and avocational opportunities in art. (117.38 8 C)

 

Response/evaluation. The student makes informed judgments about personal artworks and the artworks of others. The student is expected to analyze with the teacher or peers personal artworks in progress, using critical attributes, and participate in individual and group critique. (117.38 8 A)

 

Materials:

     12 x 18 in drawing paper

     Rulers

     Pencils

     Colored Pencils

     Thin Sharpies

     Blending pencils

How am I going to teach it?

Day 1: The teacher will present presentation on Typography. The students will write notes on this project and examples of the artwork shown on the board. They will come up with 5 ideas. They will create a typeface of three of their ideas.

 

Day 2: The student will pick one of their three sketches and create a larger draft of their illustration.

 

Day 3-7: The students will work on their drafts and if ready will use drawing paper and start their final project. The students will use sharpies to outline their work. The students will color their project with colored pencils using burnishing and other pencil techniques to create a smooth finish.

 

Day 8: The students will finish off their work and turn it in.

 

Did I teach it?

I will have teacher observation and informal conversations with the students to check for understanding and direction following. Outstanding work will be hung in the hallway.
