Who am I going to teach?

4th Grade 

 

What am I going to teach?:

Clay terms, Notre Dame Cathedral, and proper clay techniques

 

Why am I going to teach?:

Perception. The student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is expected to choose appropriate vocabulary to discuss the use of art elements such as color, texture, form, line, space, and value and art principles such as emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, and unity. ( 117.8, 1 B)

 

Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to design original artwork. (117.8, 2 B)

 

Response/evaluation. The student makes informed judgments about personal artworks and the artworks of others. The student is expected to describe intent and form conclusions about personal artworks. (117.8, 4 A)

How am I going to teach it?

Day 1: The teacher will introduce Notre Dame de Paris, specifically the rose windows, flying buttresses and gargoyles. The teacher will play the video which shows someone creating a gargoyle’s texture step by step as well as how to use various tools to create the object. They will also explain the video as it is being played. (http://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=SslBY8VbbBQ) The teacher will go over clay terms and then pass out clay.

 

Clay- A soft, moist material used to create artworks such as sculpture and pottery. Coil- A rope-like shape that has been rolled from clay or other such material.

 

Glaze- A thin, transparent, glassy coating on ceramics.

 

Kiln- The furnace in which clay is fired to harden it.

 

Potter- An artist who makes pottery.

 

Slab- A method of making pottery in which a flat piece of clay is cut into shapes which are joined together to form an object.

 

Slip- Watery clay in a creamy consistency used with scoring to join two pieces of clay.

 

Score- etching into the clay to add details, writing in clay Pinch method- A way of shaping a ball of clay into pottery by pinching, pulling, and pressing it with the hands.

 

The students will pull off a golf ball sized piece of clay off their baseball sized clay and set it aside. They will create a slab out of the rest of the clay then form it into a cone. The students will place all clay into plastic bags and then clean up their areas.

 

Day 2: The teacher will explain to the students how to create a formed head by using the pinching clay technique. The students will create their heads and attach them to their bodies. They will add some of the other pieces of their gargoyle. They will clean up and place all clay into a bag and seal it.

 

Day 3: The students will add the texture to their entire sculpture by using various tools. The students will place their works onto the cart for the clay to dry and become greenware. The teacher will fire the sculptures.

 

Day 4: The students will glaze their sculptures grey. (as well as start their next project).

 

Did I teach it?

I will have teacher observation and informal conversations with the students to check for understanding and direction following. Work will be displayed on the ledge going to the cafeteria.
